About Towns along Route 2 in the Boston Suburbs


Acton, Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Carlisle, Concord, Lexington, and Lincoln:

Although Acton’s population has almost tripled in the last three decades, the town has retained much of its rural New England character, as evidence by the traditional town center and green, with fine examples of historic architecture, stone walls and tree lined country roads.

  • Acton is located 25 miles northwest of Boston, 14 miles south of Lowell and 29 miles northeast of Worcester.
  • Acton is an ideal location for commuters as the town is located along Route 2, Route 27, Route 62, and Route 111. Route 495 and Route 128 are also in close proximity.
  • South Acton’s Commuter Rail Station provides service to Boston, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Concord, and Fitchburg and to many other areas.
  • Unlike most local public schools, Acton does not have neighborhood based schools. Parents, through a lottery system, can request which elementary school their child will attend, creating peer relationships that stretch throughout the town.

Located 6 miles from Boston, Arlington is a suburban/urban community offering city amenities within a town setting such as a large variety of restaurants, shopping facilities and stores. The housing stock is a diverse mix of homes, condos and rentals which are generally located on tree lined streets can be found in all price ranges.

  • Arlington is bordered by Cambridge, Lexington, Winchester, Belmont, Medford and Somerville.
  • Arlington is very desirable for commuters. Route 2, Route 2A and Route 60 run through the town. Route 93 and Routes 95/128 are only a short distance away.
  • The MBTA provides extensive bus service, making Arlington a very convenient place for residents who wish to use public transportation for commuting or for running their daily errands.
  • Supervised by lifeguards, Arlington’s Reservoir Beach is a popular summer destination offering swimming, fun in the sand, a play ground and restrooms.
  • The Minuteman Bikeway travels through Bedford, Lexington, Arlington and ends at the Alewife Subway Station in Cambridge.
  • Arlington offers its residents extensive opportunities for arts, music, drama and recreation.   

Belmont has excellent proximity to Boston, Cambridge and Route 2. Belmont may be best known for its mansion filled Belmont Hill neighborhood, although most residents live in areas around Belmont Hill. Many famous people such as former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Harvard Business School Professor and author Clayton Christensen and author/journalist Sebastian Junger have resided in Belmont.

  • The Alewife Subway station is located about 1.5 miles from Belmont Center.
  • Macy’s, Rancatore’s Ice Cream, Stone Hearth Pizza and the Belmont Toy Shop are just a few of the many places to visit in Belmont’s charming town center.
  • There are two MBTA Commuter Rail Stops in Belmont, which provide service to Boston and many other locations.
  • The Belmont Public Schools have an excellent reputation and is known for its strong academics, athletics, music as well as many other programs.
  • Belmont is bordered by Lexington, Arlington, Cambridge, Watertown and Waltham.

Cambridge is a unique community with a mix of cultural, economic and social diversity, intellectual vitality and technical innovation. Cambridge is an urban community which offers a diverse housing stock. Finding a parking spot in Cambridge can be very difficult. Many residences choose to use the Commuter Rail, Bus, Subway, or bike, walk or carpool to work or run their daily errands.

  • Cambridge is home to numerous medical facilities including Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge Hospital and Youville Hospital.
  • Cambridge is home to Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lesley University.
  • Route 2, Route 2A, Route 16, Route 38 and the Massachusetts Turnpike are all easily accessed from Cambridge.
  • Cambridge is bordered by Boston, Watertown, Somerville and Arlington.
  • The Cambridge Public Schools have produced thousands of interesting and renowned alumni, including Nobel Prize winning physicists, Rhodes Scholars, Olympic medal winning athletes and Academy Award winning actors and screenwriters.

Carlisle residents enjoy the rural charm of a New England

farming community with winding roads weaving past stone walls, fields farmed for generations, unspoiled woods, and a working cranberry bog.  Over 30% of the land is under some form of conservation restriction.

  • The town of Carlisle is a peaceful residential town and offers easy access to Route 2, Route 225, Route 128/95, and Route 495.
  • Carlisle maintains a small-town atmosphere with the enthusiastic support of its residents.
  • Carlisle offers an excellent public school system.
  • Carlisle is bordered by Concord, Acton, Westford, Chelmsford, Billerica, and Bedford.
  • Carlisle is about 11 miles south of Lowell, 20 miles northwest of Boston, 26 miles east of Fitchburg
  • The Gleason Public Library, offering numerous programs and services, is the cultural center of the community.

Concord is a picturesque, classic New England community which consists of handsome residences, preserved open spaces, family-owned farms and thriving commercial centers. Authors Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson and Louisa Alcott and Nathaniel Hawthorne all lived, worked and wrote in Concord. Signs of their presence in the community remain to this day through the abundance of historic and cultural resources offered.  

  • Concord is located 20 miles northwest of Boston, 15 miles south of Lowell and 34 miles northeast of Worcester.
  • Route 2 runs through Concord and Routes 128/95, Route 495 and Route 93 are easily accessed.
  • Concord offers two charming town centers (Concord and West Concord center) including quaint shops and places to eat.  
  • The MBTA bus services Concord. The MBTA Commuter Rail, providing service to Boston, Cambridge and Fitchburg and has two stations located in Concord.
  • Walden Pond, a National Historic Landmark, is a popular destination for fishing, swimming and hiking.
  • Emerson Hospital, a full service hospital, is located in Concord.
  • Concord is bordered by Carlisle, Bedford, Lincoln, Acton, Maynard and Sudbury.

Lexington prides itself on the beauty of town land, the safety of its residents and the excellence of its public school system.   • Lexington is located 11 miles northwest of Boston, approximately 15 minutes from Cambridge and 17 miles from Logan Airport.
  • A convenient commuting location, Lexington offers direct access to Route 2, Routes 4/225 and Route 128/95. Route 93 and Route 3 are only a short distance away.
  • Lexington Center offers a wide variety of places to eat and shop. The beautiful brick walkways and benches in Lexington Center make it a popular destination to enjoy an ice cream or coffee, catch a movie, meet up with friends and family for lunch and dinner, or to relax and read a book.
  • Lexington is bordered by Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Burlington, Lincoln, Waltham, Winchester and Woburn.
  • The MBTA provides bus service in Lexington to a variety of location including the Alewife Subway Station.
  •  An in-town bus service is provided by Lexpress which is a very convenient way for people of all ages to travel around town.
  • The very popular, 11 mile Minuteman Bikeway travels through Lexington, eventually ending at the Alewife Subway Station in Cambridge.

Lincoln is a small suburb west of Boston. Known for its excellent public school system.  Residents note that Lincoln is a quiet, pretty place to be all year round, whether to visit a museum or walk in the woods. Significant areas of Lincoln are preserved against development, providing protection for wildlife, water supply and creating conservation trails for public use.

  • Lincoln is located 13 miles northwest of Boston and 18 miles south of Lowell.
  • Route 2, Route 117 and Route 126 pass through Lincoln, Route 128 is easily accessed in the neighboring towns of Lexington and Waltham.
  • MBTA Commuter Rail service to Boston is available from the Lincoln or Waltham stations.
  • The MBTA also provides bus service for Lincoln.
  • Lincoln offers an extensive Recreation Department and facilities for its residences. The Codman Pool is a popular destination in the summer.
  • Lincoln is bordered by Sudbury, Concord, Bedford, Lexington, Waltham, Weston and Wayland.
